The Distance to Here is the fourth studio album by the band Live, released in 1999. It debuted at #4 on the Billboard 200, selling 138,000 copies in its first week and was certified Platinum by the RIAA on November 19, 1999.1.

That's a very justified leader (though still no love for my favourite Dollar, Dollar). I didn't expect any to make the top 20 really, new albums always struggle. I also wonder if more 'hardcore' PJ Harvey fans tend to like her earlier stuff more, while it's a different audience per se that likes her last two albums. My thoughts about this album will follow soon.). What can I say about this incredible album?

When it came out, I was already a huge fan of the band, one who very much enjoyed their first three albums. The smart/personal/political debut, the angry/rocking follow-up and the mysterious/dark third were all solid albums. But to me, The Distance to Here is the best that Live ever got. The spiritual/love/humanistic themes that run through this album never fail to inspire me when I listen. I think each song deserves to be discussed.1. 'The Dolphin's Cry' – The lead single. Like the song that closes the album, this is a powerful love song.

'Love will lead us, she will lead us' - such simple, yet beautiful and profound words. The idea that love could save the world was put forth many years prior by George Harrison in Within You, Without You and it's beautiful to see the boys in Live holding the torch.2. 'The Distance' – This song's philosophical/spiritual themes address the anxiety caused by life itself. I love the 'let's hold out for something sweeter' line, which suggests reincarnation and that better things may be in store down the road.3. 'Sparkle' – Another powerful song of universal love. I find the line 'love will overcome' that is repeated in the chorus to be particularly uplifting.

Also, 'don't wait for the seas to part.don't sit around a waste this chance' is great, highlighting the importance of Now, as they did in the first album a number of times. A theme that will show up later in this album as well.4.

'Run to the Water' - I know that Live has been accused of being preachy, but I have never been bothered by their writing, perhaps because I usually agree with their viewpoint. This song is no exception. To me, this song is summed up by the lyric 'and I will never leave you, 'til we can say, this world is just a dream, we were sleepin', now we are awake.'

I love this statement of dedication to the cause, to helping/loving/waking up others. Sure, it's idealistic, but that's one of the things I love most about Live. They talk in their lyrics about the difficulties involved in living such a life and they provide inspiration to work towards this kind of life.5.

'Sun' – I am a big sun freak, I love sitting in the sun. Whether it's summer/spring/winter/fall, I am always trying to get some sun each day. So this song celebrates that for me. I also love they way the lyrics suggest not being ruled/controlled by the world around us and later on to 'not eat the fruit too low.' To me, this suggests celebrating a higher love, rather than merely lust.6.

'Voodoo Lady'- Brilliantly, this song brings the seriousness down for a few minutes. The woman in the song, suggesting that the protagonist 'light up a cigarette and calm the f^&. down.' Even the tone and words used help lighten the overall mood of the album here. I love the reminder that people do not choose the situation that they are born into and perhaps could celebrate what they have rather than getting too serious or heavy. 'We could have been born helpless children, beggin' for our next meal.'

'Where Fishes Go' – 'Whatcha doin in this darkness baby?' Another spiritual song that cleverly describes different paths that one can take. I love the analogy of the sea and fish. Incidentally, the fish is the largest single item on the cover.8.

'Face and Ghost (The Children's Song)' – Just a beautiful song, one that for me suggests gratitude again. 'You've got it bad, no you got it good.' Many ways to look at the same situation.9. 'Feel the Quiet River Rage' – The universal spiritual message of staying with love in the face of hate is explored here again. Also impermanence.

'Always, fighting the storm, building shelter to house our lack of love, we're only here for awhile, tear it down.' Just brilliant writing.10. 'Meltdown' – 'I long for the one who is FIRE amongst the dreamers' - who doesn't long for that? A strong song that sets up the best song on the album for me.11. 'They Stood Up for Love' - 'We spend all of our lives, goin' out of our minds, lookin back to our birth, forward to our demise.' Such true words, unfortunately. An almost outright denial of this given moment (mentioned earlier - 'today we live a thousand years, all we have is now'), lost in the past and the future.

And that brilliant line 'we made it to the moon, but we can't make it home.' Just stunning stuff.12. 'We Walk in the Dream' – Having conquered one's demons, one is free to walk in the dream, to 'dream no more.'

What a beautiful thing, for life to be beautiful, for us to live our dreams. This album makes me feel like this is possible when I listen to it.13. 'Dance With You' – Like the love song that begins this album, only a much more tender, heartfelt song now. A peaceful, warm love, but one that stays with many of the themes that came previously in this album. 'In this altered state, full of so much pain and rage, you know we've got to find a way to let it go.' I fully agree.

Nice to see this writeup, thanks George. I actually listened to this one more than any other Live album, and they were a big favorite band of mine when I was younger.Lyrically, a big step in the right direction, and their best. It also has the most really uplifting moments of any of their albums, in my opinion. Some of the songs on this one (The Dolphin's Cry, They Stood Up For Love) give me chills.I got into this album in the fall, the year it came out. Just about every year, in October sometime, this one gets a few spins at top volume while I'm driving around. Probably always will.If I had to pick a favorite, it might end up being Throwing Copper, just because of the huge impact it had when it came out.

But this one is very close, maybe equally as good for me, just different. Definitely more personal. This album was like a religious experience for me on several levels: 'Don't try to find the answers, when there ain't no question here. Brother let your heart be wounded, and give no mercy to your fears'.More than any other in my lifetime, this album clicked so completely with my own existence and things that were going on: in the ashes of a 2nd relationship that really tore the rug out, childhood crap at the forefront of my mind again, and the process of becoming a bio-dad for best friends.Live's best, and my #3 all-time fave. Also my biggest Holy Grail on vinyl. All songs written by Ed Kowalczyk, except where noted:1.

'Intro' – 0:372. 'Simple Creed' (Kowalczyk, Tricky) – 3:243. 'Deep Enough' – 3:194. 'Like a Soldier' – 3:125. 'People Like You' – 3:176. 'Transmit Your Love' – 4:357. 'Forever May Not Be Long Enough' (Kowalczyk, Glen Ballard) – 3:498.

'Deep Enough' (remix, bonus track) – 3:11V is the fifth album by the band Live, released in 2001. It featuring the singles 'Simple Creed' and 'Overcome', the latter of which received significant exposure following the September 11 attacks. The collection of songs that became V was never intended to be released as an album. Guitarist Chad Taylor said, 'The goal was to prepare songs for the next studio session. MCA got a hold of the material and pushed us to call it an album.' The songs were originally going to be released free to fans as a collection called Ecstatic Fanatic.1 V only reached number 22 on the album chart in the US and failed to attain Gold status, despite reasonably positive reviews.' Deep Enough' was intended to be the album's first single until the record company overruled the band and released 'Simple Creed' instead. What is al qaeda's goal. Those who stated that V is their worst - 'have you heard Birds of Pray?'

I barely made it through that one once. It was so bad that I didn't even bother with the one that came after it.V on the other hand, has a lot of good songs. I plan to comment on all of them later, when I have enough time to be thorough.I also plan on getting the follow up (and last Live album) to Birds of Pray, as I am curious now that I see that allmusic agrees with me about BoP and they give high marks to Live's final album.

It also left her free to experiment with her style of songwriting. Where Dry and Rid of Me seemed brutally honest, To Bring You My Love feels theatrical, with each song representing a grand gesture. Relying heavily on religious metaphors and imagery borrowed from the blues, Harvey has written a set of songs that are lyrically reminiscent of Nick Cave's and Tom Waits' literary excursions into the gothic American heartland. Since she was a product of post-punk, she's nowhere near as literally bluesy as Cave or Waits, preferring to embellish her songs with shards of avant guitar, eerie keyboards, and a dense, detailed production. It's a far cry from the primitive guitars of her first two albums, but Harvey pulls it off with style, since her songwriting is tighter and more melodic than before; the menacing 'Down by the Water' has genuine hooks, as does the psycho stomp of 'Meet Ze Monsta,' the wailing 'Long Snake Moan,' and the stately 'C'Mon Billy.'

The clear production by Harvey, Flood, and John Parish makes these growths evident, which in turn makes To Bring You My Love her most accessible album, even if the album lacks the indelible force of its predecessors.
